Inequality is a problem all over the world. Equality is a human right and that is why Sustainable Development Goal #10 is reduce inequality.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The United Nations agreed on making 17 SDG goals and plan on achieving them by 2030. These goals were made to address global problems, bring world peace and help us all have a sustainable future.

So what does reduce inequality mean?

The definition of this goal is to ensure equal opportunities and reduce inequalities outcomes, by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and action in this regard. Inequality can cause physical and mental illness, violence, lower levels of trust, weaker community life, poorer child well-being, and more drug abuse.

How is the world doing on this goal right now?

“The growth rate in the welfare aggregate of the bottom 40 percent is computed as the annualized average growth rate in per capita real consumption or income of the bottom 40 percent of the population in the income distribution in a country from household surveys over approximately a five year period.”

The targets:

1. REDUCE INCOME INEQUALITIES

By 2030, progressively achieve and sustain income growth of the bottom 40 per cent of the population at a rate higher than the national average.

2. ENSURE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND END DISCRIMINATION

Ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and action in this regard.

3. ENCOURAGE DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE AND INVESTMENT IN LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES

Encourage official development assistance and financial flows, including foreign direct investment, to States where the need is greatest, in particular least developed countries, African countries, small island developing States and landlocked developing countries, in accordance with their national plans and programmes.

4. PROMOTE UNIVERSAL SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL INCLUSION

By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status.
